Property is taxed according to millage rates assessed by the Newton County Commissioner and the Newton County Board of Education.
Millage
The Newton County Commissioner and the Newton County Board of Education set the tax rate (millage rate) annually. A tax rate of one mill represents a tax liability of [insert rate] per $1,000 of your property’s assessed value. The rates of several taxing authorities estimating their total revenue from other sources usually combine to make up your total tax bill. This figure is subtracted from their overall budgetary needs, and then a millage rate is set that will generate the necessary revenues to fulfill budgetary requirements.
The Newton County Tax Commissioner’s Office is responsible for billing and collection for Newton County, but plays no part in determining the amounts of any taxes or fees.
